Can Women With Implants Still Breast-Feed?

Millions of women have had silicone implants to increase the size of their breasts, and many did not think about breast-feeding at the time of the operation.

After Your Breast Enhancement, Can You Still Breast-Feed?

The short answer to this question is, it depends on how the surgeon has done with the operation.

If the milk ducts that lead to the nipple are severed or blocked then breast-feeding is out.

The same is true if the nerve or blood supply to the nipple has been affected by the surgery.

However, in other cases, breast feeding with an implant should be possible.

Many women report problems such as blocked milk ducts and abscesses after breast operations of all kinds - not just cosmetic surgery.

However, loss of sensation around the nipple often occurs with implants.

This can lead to interference with the operation of the hormones prolactin and oxytocin, which are both involved in milk production.

Some women have implants in just one breast to remedy a lopsided look.

In these cases there should be no problem in feeding with the unaffected breast.

There have been scare stories about implants, but the good news is that they do not deteriorate as you get older and they don't suddenly explode if you go up in an aircraft.

Mantra: ‘You can't cure brain death but you can prevent it.
